    Lost Job Need Advice

I live in a city with about 500,000 in the surrounding area. There are not a lot of programming jobs here. Many of the programming jobs required .NET experience.  I only know VB6. I put off learning .NET because i wanted to learn to program correctly using OOP concepts rather than doing procedural programming in an OOP language.

On my previous job i was the sole programmer.  I worked there 8 years, but programmed only part-time. Sometimes going months without doing anything dealing with programming. I've never worked in a team environment. I get along well with people but i have no idea what a new employer would expect of me.

I'm debating whether i should continue to struggle to get into the programming industry or if i should just switch fields.  I love programming but if I don't get a job soon, I'm afraid I will be locked out of the industry for good.

I would be glad to let you see my resume.

    Thanks!

While I think it is a good idea to get good at one thing (your case OOP), you need to pick up the skills needed in the market. If you do have a good grasp of fundamentls, things like .NET should be more of an extention, rather than a re-learn.

Good luck on the job search.

     Hello Maurice,

My experience has been that passion and committment are the key drivers to success. Figure out what you love to do, commit to being good at it, to accepting no alternative and to being in it 100%, and the energy of it will open doors a person could never of imagined.

When someone comes to us with these attributes, they stand out like a light bulb.

    Regards,

    Barry
